The Ballad of RYLA

One of our volunteers had such an incredible time, he had to write this ballad!

By Cecil Rhodes

From all over Colorado

To Leadville they came.

Bright, talented and hopeful,

Some destined for fame.

As an adult volunteer

I checked each one in.

Anxiously awaiting for

Our adventure to begin.

Assigned to Team Blue,

I was to watch and listen,

And hope my experience

Would add to our mission.

The group formed a bond

With amazing speed.

They even included

An old fogey like me.

Many challenges lay before us,

Many puzzles to be solved.

Communication was our strength

Each team member evolved.

Our team worked together

Like a well oiled machine.

No task was too much

For these incredible teens.

Each moment, each hour,

Each day passed by fast.

When I hit the bed

I was thoroughly gassed.

It ended too soon.

It was time to say goodbye.

We hugged and I smiled,

But with a tear in my eye.

It’s been three days now

And I’m still on a high.

I think back with a chuckle,

But still have to sigh.

Together we connected

Over two generations.

Proving the importance

Of effective communication.

So next year when

The call goes out.

I’ll be there again

Without a doubt!
